UPPER MUNSTANG TREK

Upper Mustang Trek is a 14-day long journey that provides a marvelous trekking experience in the mountain region of Nepal. Acknowledge the long, rich, and complex history of the “Last Forbidden Kingdom” - Mustang. The journey takes you through the undisturbed Tibetan Buddhist culture of Mustang. On the trek explore various caves, monasteries, rock paintings, and gompas. The trek leads trekkers to the hidden Buddhist world known as Lo. The distinct trans-Himalayan mountain area has a distinct Tibetan feel to it, as its culture and people are different. There is also an Amchi museum where trekkers can learn about this ancient healing art. From Lo Manthang, a few hours of the walk is Gyakar Gompa which is famous for its rock painting. Ghar Gompa, which is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, is over 1200 years old. Overall, this upper mustang trek follows the ancient salt route which makes the journey once in a lifetime experience.

DETAIL ITINERARY

Day 1: Drive to Pokhara (900m)

Early in the morning, our day starts with the scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The six-hour-long bus ride will take you through Western Himalayas. Enjoy the evening in the beautiful city of Lakes Pokhara. Overnight at a hotel in Pokhara.

Day 2: Fly to Jomsom and trek to Kagbeni (2800m)

In the early morning, we will catch a flight to Jomsom. It will be a 20 minutes long flight to Jomsom. From Jomsom, we will start our trek along with Kali Gandaki before reaching Kagbeni. Overnight in Kagbeni.

Day 3: Trek to Chele (3050m)

After having early morning breakfast our trail continues through the Chhusang village. As we cross the picturesque village Chhusang and Kali Gandaki valley, we now climb up to Chele. We will spend the night in Chele.

Day 4: Trek to Syangboche (3800m)

Today our trail continues along with a steep barren land of Samar village. Now, we will climb up to the ridge and descend into a giant gorge crossing a stream before reaching the Syangboche. Overnight at the Hotel in Syangboche.

Day 5: Trek to Ghami (3520m)

Early in the morning, we will gently hike up to the village of Gelling. From Gelling we will now climb through the left trail. After half an hour of trek, we now reach Ghami where we will spend our overnight.

Day 6: Trek to Charang (3560m)

After having a delicious breakfast our trails start passing the rough terrain. The trek would be splendid with the stunning beauty of the remote countryside. Upon reaching Charang you can have some rest. Overnight at Charang village.

Day 7: Trek to Lo-Manthang (3840m)

After having a splendid night we will start our trek to Lo-Manthang which was the capital of the Kingdom Lo. Our trail passes through Lo-Gekar and to Lo-Manthang. Enjoy the day by visiting ancient temples and monasteries.

Day 8: Acclimatization day in Lo-Manthang

Today is the exploration day of the journey. We will spend the day visiting the Namgyal Gompa, which is located on a hilltop. After that exploration can be continued by visiting Tingkhar village. Overnight in Lo-Manthang.

Day 9: Trek to Dhamkar (3820m)

After having breakfast we will head for Dhamkar. Through the upper highland trail, we will continue our trek with some marvelous views of Lo-Manthang and Charang valley. We will spend the night in Dhamkar.

Day 10: Trek to Syangboche 

Today our trail continues along the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri mountains. As we cross the Rachen Gompa, the mystical gompa, we will hike down to Syangbochen. We will have our overnight stay in Syangboche.

Day 11: Trek to Chhusang (2980m)

After having breakfast our trail starts through steep ridges and over hills. Now, we continue to Tetang, which is the upper village of Chhusang lying between two hills. Overnight at the hotel of Chhusang.

Day 12: Trek to Jomsom (2720m)

Today our trail leads through Jharkot village visiting the grand Tibetan Herbal Medicine Center and ancient fortress. In Jomsom, we will celebrate our last day of the trek. 

Day 13: Flight back to Pokhara 

After having a delicious breakfast once again we will have a scenic 20-minute flight to Pokhara. Enjoy the day by exploring the beautiful city of Pokhara. Overnight at a hotel in Pokhara.

Day 14: Drive Back to Kathmandu

Today we will have a scenic drive to Kathmandu. It will be a six-hour-long scenic bus ride passing various green forests, typical villages, and rivers. Enjoy an evening at the tourist hub of Nepal Thamel.
